Tips For Preparing Your Teen For Driving

by Armando Elliott

Learning to drive is a rite of passage, and it's also something that takes a lot of preparation. While getting a driver's license is something your teenager will be very excited about, you want to make sure they are as prepared as possible before they take their driver's test. One thing that you should realize is once your teen gets their license, they will likely stop paying as much attention to your advice on driving. This means you have a limited time in which to remind them of all the important things you hope they keep fresh in their minds at all times when they are driving. Here are some of the tips you should know in order to make sure your child is as prepared as possible for driving on their own.

Make them take many practice tests.

Your teen will have to pass one written test to get their permit and a road test to get their license. You don't want your teen to squeak by when they barely pass the random written test they were given. For this reason, you should have your teen take many online practice tests on their own. These tests can be found online for free. Your teen will be instantly scored on the practice tests, and you can see just how much they really know. Once you feel they truly understand the rules of the road, then you can allow them to take the actual test for their permit.

Make them take a pre-licensing driving course.

In some states, a pre-licensing driving course is mandatory, but in some states it is optional. For example, in New York a 5-hour pre-licensing driving course is mandatory. No matter what the case may be for the state you live in, you should make sure your teen takes this course. This type of course will educate your teen on the rules of the road but will also go into important safety concerns and other information that will help your teen to be a safer driver.

Make sure your teen gets as much practice as possible.

Once your teen has their permit, you are going to want to make sure they get as much time as possible with you before they take the road test to get their license. Don't allow them to rush into things, and only do things enough to meet the requirements. The more time they have with your instruction and guidance, the more prepared they will be as a new driver on the road.
